March is designated as Tsunami and Earthquake Smart Month. This has been done in an effort to promote tsunami and earthquake awareness; and to educate the public on tsunami and earthquake preparedness to mitigate the risk associated with these infrequent but destructive hazards.

The Technical Standing Committee on Coastal Hazards (TSCCH) is co-chaired by the DEM and Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU). This Committee was mandated by the Cabinet of Barbados to deliver the national components of Tsunamis and other Coastal Hazards Warning Systems for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions. An initiative of the TSCCH is the Tsunami and Earthquake Smart month of Activities.

The Tsunami and Earthquake poster was conceptualized and designed by the DEM to highlight the 50th anniversary and to promote the month.
